Step one was clinching a playoff berth. That was accomplished weeks ago. Now, against old rivals in Greenville, there are two scenarios in which the Owls could clinch a top four spot. Which is to say, they could lock down a home playoff match in the quarterfinals at minimum should the following play out:
Union Omaha wins at Greenville Triumph SC
AND Chattanooga Red Wolves SC draws/loses at FC Naples
AND One Knoxville SC draws/loses vs. Westchester SC
OR
Union Omaha draws at Greenville Triumph SC
AND Athletic Club Boise draws/loses at Corpus Christi FC
AND One Knoxville SC loses vs. Westchester SC
AND Chattanooga Red Wolves SC loses at FC Naples
It requires several different results to happen, of course, and each of Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Boise are facing teams below the playoff line… but we’re telling you there’s a chance that it gets locked down as early as Sunday night. Beyond that, the chase for the club’s fourth Players’ Shield is still well and truly on, so Union Omaha would love to keep this winning streak alive.
What else is there to know for this match? We’re glad you asked:
- Sergio Ors Navarro is on a tear right now. The Spaniard has three goals and one assist in September, and eight of his ten goals in the league have come since July 18. That’s rocketed him up to a tie for fifth in the Golden Boot rankings, while his 10.09 xG (expected goals) on the year is 6th in USL League One.
- More pertinently, he now sits just one goal away from a tie with Steevan Dos Santos as the club’s all-time leading scorer.
- Greenville may be playing out the year under interim coach Joel Tyson, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to simply back off. Their 16.5 tackles per match puts them top of the league, while they’re also second in fouls per match with 15.5.
- Another record could be tied this weekend as well: a win would put Union Omaha at 19 wins on the season. That would equal the 2023 high-water marks set by them and North Carolina FC for wins in a single season, and with plenty of time to set a new record as well.
