Omaha, Nebr. (Sept 5, 2026) – In a must-win match against the newly crowned league leaders, Union Omaha rose to the challenge and ran out 2-0 victors over Charlotte Independence.
A 22nd minute red card by Souaibou Marou put the Jacks behind the 8-ball early on, with goals by Marlon Vargas and Sergio Ors Navarro lifting the Owls past their visitors.
“Of course Charlotte losing the best attacker in the league right now, on unreal form, is going to make them struggle a little more in attack, but I still expected them to try and hit us in transition and hurt us whenever we lost the ball,” said Head Coach Vincenzo Candela, noting how Charlotte’s gameplan didn’t ultimately change much despite the red card. “When they went down to ten men, we just needed to reinforce those behaviors, and I think we did that.”
For that first quarter of the match, it was properly end-to-end football from both sides, just what was expected from a pair of high-flying, attacking squads. It did all change with that foul, however. Marou, the Golden Boot leader with 12 goals, bore down on goalkeeper Cole Jensen in a one-on-one situation. His lunge for the ball became a kick delivered to Jensen’s gut, and after an initial ruling of a yellow card, the referees deliberated and decided to send Marou off.
A fortuitously timed hydration break allowed Charlotte time to strategize on how to reorganize now that they were down a man. For about twenty minutes, they did keep the Owls at arm’s length. In the 44th minute, though, Kempes Tekiela’s ball from midfield unleashed Allen Gavilanes down the left flank in acres of space. His early cross found Marlon Vargas alone against the goalkeeper, and his first-time blast rocketed past Matt Levy for the opening goal.
The second half was more of the same; Charlotte threatening in transition while still trying to mitigate the potential damages, and Omaha looking to exploit the undermanned Jacks with switches of play and combination passing.
Charlotte hung in until the bitter end, with Levy coming up big in the 76th to stonewall Gavilanes on a one-on-one situation, and the Owls constantly unable to find a final pass or shot despite several opportunities in transition. Charlotte had their own counterattacks and corner kicks to put some fear into the home team, but none of them could find a way through. Among other notable aspects of the victory, this was Omaha’s first clean sheet at home since May 23rd.
“Our goal going into every game is to be as clean and tidy as we can from front to back, as a collective. We’re happy with the result, a big win at home, and it’s good to get another clean sheet,” said goalkeeper Cole Jensen.
It was the 96th minute that saw one of those finally represent a breakthrough. Laurence Wootton nicked the ball off an exhausted Independence player down the flank, then drove forward. After squaring it to Sergio Ors Navarro, the Spaniard let loose a shot that just trickled through the goalkeeper’s gloves and through the wickets to finally put the match to bed.
“We always look at it as a one-game cycle, through the entire year,” said Head Coach Vincenzo Candela. “The biggest thing for me this game was that we were able to put together a complete performance against one of the best teams in the league. I’m very proud of what this result means for the level of the group. This is the standard that we can be at every game, and we just have to take it into the next one. That’s going to help us pick up points anywhere.”
That “anywhere” will stretch to Corpus Christi, where the Owls will be headed next weekend for the first time. They’ll kick off at 7:30pm on Saturday, September 12th down in Texas. After that, it’s a pair of home matches for Union Omaha back home at Morrison Stadium. Students & Educators’ Day, presented by Family Fare & Supermercado, will be a noon match on Wednesday, September 16th against Spokane Velocity FC and feature plenty of educational exhibits on the concourse for thousands of students attending the match. Then, Hispanic Heritage Night, presented by Centris, will be on Saturday, September 19th at 7:00pm against One Knoxville SC, with a mariachi band, dancers, and much much more!
