Former Creighton, Greenville assistant coach returns to USL League One
OMAHA, Nebr. (August 13, 2026) – Union Omaha has added Nicolas Luque to the club’s technical staff. Luque, whose most recent experience includes both assistant and head coach roles in Omaha, will support Head Coach Vincenzo Candela.
“To join a group halfway through the year is always challenging,” said Candela, “but bringing someone on with local ties to the community, that also has the right character, while possessing wonderful knowledge of the game like Nico; is something we thought could help us lift the group in the second half of the year and beyond. It has been great to have him join our group and staff.”
This won’t be Luque’s first experience in USL League One. He spent three seasons (2021 and 2023-24) with Greenville Triumph as head assistant coach and video analyst. In that time he led set-piece design, tactics for training, produced scouting reports and analyses, and took on a mentoring role within the coaching staff. Luque was even acting head coach for two matches, notching a win and a draw. After his time in Greenville, he became an assistant coach at Creighton University in January 2024, taking on not just scouting and training work but also leading recruitment and scholarship allocation. He has also been the head coach of the UPSL’s Omaha Street FC since January 2026, leading the club to regular season division runners-up this past spring.
Luque got his start in coaching straight out of college, becoming director and head coach at Coerver SC. There, he grew their youth program from one location to four in upstate South Carolina while managing everything from coaching curricula to training equipment. He was also an assistant coach in the college ranks, including his alma maters Southern Wesleyan University and Concordia University Nebraska. He also helped lead USC Upstate to the most wins in the program’s Division I history, seeing them even catapult into the top 50 nationally in 2020-21.
“I am honored and thrilled to join Union Omaha as a coach,” said Luque. “This club has a remarkable history and a clear vision for growth, and a bright future that excites the community, the players, and the coaches. I want to thank Vincenzo Candela and Jamie Henderson for the opportunity to join a great organization and have the chance to roll up my sleeves and work daily with a great group of players. I’m eager to bring my experiences and knowledge to the table, collaborate with the team and help bring Union Omaha to new heights! Viva Búhos!”
