USL League One veteran to lead the Owls this season
PAPILLION, Neb. (March 29, 2022) – Union Omaha announced today that midfielder Conor Doyle has been named team captain for the 2022 campaign. Doyle provides the team with more than 10 years of professional experience and featured in every match during the 2021 USL League One Championship campaign.
Doyle finished the season tied for second on the team and fifth in the league with 6 assists. He earned Team of the Week honors after Union Omaha’s Week 15 draw with Forward Madison, where he recorded a quality assist on the Owls’ lone goal, won 6 out of 7 duels, and won 2 tackles.
The McKinney, Texas native came to Union Omaha after achieving both national and international success. He played for U.S. National Team at the U-20 and U-23 levels and the Irish National Team at the U-21 level. He also spent 3 seasons in MLS, where he helped D.C. United to a U.S. Open Cup title in 2013.
His experience and leadership will be huge asset to the Owls as they look to repeat as USL League One Champions in 2022.
“It’s a huge honor obviously to be captain of any team,” Doyle said. “It comes with a little bit of responsibility, and I think last year I finally stepped into a leadership-type role, and it was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it.”
“Conor is a great player and an even better person,” Union Omaha head coach Jay Mims said. “He leads by example every day with such great humility and will be such a great influence for our players and staff. Conor was a huge piece to our championship last season, and I am thrilled and honored to having him represent our club and city this season.”
The 2022 League One Championship defending campaign is set to begin on April 9 with a visit to Forward Madison FC. The home opener at Werner Park is set for April 23 vs. USL1 newcomer Central Valley Fuego FC.
