Damià Viader first started playing soccer in Spain when he was 5 years old. The full-time player and Bellevue University student has come a long way since then playing for some of the best academies in the world in Spain and now as a defender for Union Omaha in USL League One.

Viader launched his United States soccer career when he first played for the Barton Cougars of Barton Community College located in Great Bend, Kansas. In 2019, he transferred to Iowa Western Community College where he played for the Reivers and completed an Associate’s Degree in Business.

The now 23-year-old talented defender is chasing his dreams both on and off the pitch. When he signed with Union Omaha in 2020, Viader also enrolled to take classes after receiving a scholarship to Bellevue University. Bellevue University is the Official Education Partner of Union Omaha and the United Soccer League. Viader is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration.

“My experience with Bellevue University has been great,” Viader said. “I have an incredible academic advisor that helps me a lot and I’m happy with my teachers. They're helping me and I'm growing and I'm getting to learn a lot of new things.”

With so many years of experience playing his favorite sport, Viader said he hopes to make it to the top tier of professional soccer leagues one day.

“Once I graduate, I’m hoping I can split time and play professionally and find a way to work in a business-related career,” Viader said.

But, Viader understands how difficult it can be to play professionally at the highest levels, so he’s not without a backup plan.

“If I decide to stop playing soccer, I know that my degree from Bellevue University will be really valuable in the future and that's why I was so happy to have the opportunity to pursue my degree,” he said.

Viader was recruited to play for Union Omaha by current head coach Jay Mims. So far this season, the team’s record is 6-1-4. The Owls’ regular season will run through Saturday, Oct. 12. 2021. For more information about the team and upcoming matches, visit unionomaha.com.
